What is the testing criteria for the USCIS naturalization interview?
During the interview, the officer will ask questions about the applicant's Form N-400 and background, also the applicant will be tested on the topics of English and civics. The English portion consists of writing, reading and speaking. The speaking will be evaluated throughout the interview. For the writing evaluation, the officer will speak a sentence, then the applicant will be required to write the sentence. The applicant will be given three sentences of which one has to be written correctly. For the reading evaluation, the applicant will be given a sentence that is written down, and will be required to read it correctly. The applicant will be given three sentences of which one has to be read correctly. The civics portion of the test will evaluate the applicant's knowledge of US history and government. The 2008 civics test will have 10 questions out of a possible 100, of which 6 has to be answered correctly. If applicants filed their Form N-400 before December 1, 2020 or after March 1, 2021 they will continue to take the 2008 civics test at initial interview, re-interview, or N-336 hearing. If applicants filed their naturalization applications on or after Dec. 1, 2020, and before March 1, 2021, with an initial interview before April 19, 2021, they had the option to take either the 2008 civics test, or the 2020 civics test at initial interview, re-interview, or N-336. The USCIS has decided to phase out the 2020 version of the civics test. Our course only focuses on the 2008 version which is the current test being administered. The English test remains the same.
